Cookies

Q: What are cookies?
A: There are two types of cookies -- persistent and non-persistent. Persistent cookies store a block of text (up to 255 characters in length) in a file on an individual's hard drive. Their primary use is to record individuals' preferences, thereby allowing personalization of a user's site experience. These cookies may allow users to customize the appearance of the site, or allow developers to improve the site by observing individuals patterns of site use. Non-persistent cookies do not use a text file to record information. These cookies store information only temporarily in memory. If the individual logs out or closes down the browser, these cookies are eliminated. Retirement Manager uses only non-persistent cookies.

Q: How does Retirement Manager use cookies?
A: In a secure site such as Retirement Manager, non-persistent cookies remember what happens during an individual's "session." For Retirement Manager, a session may be defined as continuous use of the site, possibly exiting and revisiting the site, without logging out. A session is automatically terminated if the site isn't actively used for any 10-minute time period. Retirement Manager use of cookies allows an individual to maintain an uninterrupted state of authenticated log-in. Retirement Manager cookies are eliminated at the end of a session -- if the individual is logged out of the site or if the browser is closed down.

Q: Can my privacy or security be compromised if I set my browser to accept cookies?

Q: How is Retirement Manager cookie information stored?
A: Unique session and transaction IDs are stored temporarily in memory and are available only during the course of a session; they are eliminated when the session is terminated.

Q: If I turn off the feature on my browser that accepts cookies automatically, what will happen?
A: Each time the Web site tries to access cookies during your session, you will get a pop-up alert message. Depending on the site, you could receive a great number of these messages, which you must actively accept or reject by clicking on a response in the pop-up. To use Retirement Manager, your browser must be set to accept cookies. Your browser may be set, however, to selectively accept cookies. Selective acceptance allows only certain sites' (like Retirement Manager's) cookies to be accepted, while other sites' cookies are rejected by your browser. See your browser's help documentation or contact your browser manufacturer for more information on automatic and selective cookie acceptance.
